Eric Martin Hoyos, beloved son, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2025, at the age of 57. Born on May 25, 1968, in West Covina, California, Eric was the son of the late Bertil Armando Hoyos and Beatriz Helena Hoyos, and the cherished brother of three siblings.
From an early age, Eric’s determination and athletic ability set him apart. A gifted swimmer and water polo player, he rose to become one of South Florida’s top high school athletes. In 1985, as a junior, he placed fifth in the state in both the 50m and 100m freestyle events, improving to third place as a senior. Over his high school career, he helped lead his swim team to eight district championships and captured two individual state titles. As captain of the water polo team, Eric guided his teammates to two championship victories and earned Most Valuable Player honors both seasons. His achievements earned him a full college scholarship, where he continued to compete as a standout swimmer.
After college, Eric dedicated his life to serving others as a lifeguard, EMT, and firefighter for the City of Pompano Beach, protecting the community he loved. He also became a licensed pilot and twice won the ESPN International Lifeguard Challenge in Hawaii, furthering his reputation for excellence and perseverance.
Eric’s life took a profound turn following a spinal cord injury sustained in a diving accident during his time as a lifeguard, resulting in quadriplegia. Yet he faced this challenge with extraordinary courage and resolve. Refusing to be defined by his injury, Eric earned his real estate license, built a successful career in home sales, and lived independently—owning his own home and car and managing his daily life with quiet strength and dignity.
To all who knew him, Eric was a symbol of resilience and hope. His unwavering spirit, humor, and love of life touched everyone around him. He will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and for the way he continued to inspire others—both through his athletic achievements and his unbreakable determination in the face of adversity.
Eric’s life and legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless people who were moved by his example of perseverance and grace.
