November 25, 1939 — July 18, 2025

Coconut Creek, FL – John W. Donahue, an accomplished jockey whose life was deeply entwined with the thrill of the thoroughbred racetrack, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, July 17, 2025, in Coconut Creek, FL, after a brief illness. He was 86 years old.

Born on April 7, 1939, in Havana, Cuba, John was the son of the late Marguerite (Wright) Donahue and the late John E. Donahue. His early life was marked by travel, as his father was stationed in Havana by Pan American Airways, his employer. Before the family settled in Miami, FL, John also lived in Puerto Rico and Saint Thomas, giving him a diverse upbringing.

After graduating from Coral Gables High School, John began his journey into the world of horse racing as an exercise rider. This launched him into a successful career as a professional jockey. John became a familiar figure on thoroughbred racetracks across New York, New England, and Florida. He won his first race as a jockey on August 4, 1960, riding "Check The Bet" to the winner's circle. His career spanned over two decades, culminating in his final win on July 14, 1982, aboard "Adrian's Road." He rode his last race and retired from the sport in 1984.

John was actively involved with the Jockeys' Guild throughout his career, working to secure safe racing environments and other essential benefits for riders. He also implemented programs at every track he worked to help riders in need, showing his compassion and support within the racing community.

Beyond his professional achievements, John was known for his love of sharing tales from his days on the track. These stories often included humorous anecdotes about competing against his son, Gary, who also became a jockey. Their shared profession frequently led to them racing against each other, creating memorable and often amusing experiences that John cherished recounting.

John found joy in spending time with his friends and family. He also loved traveling with Carol, his beloved wife of 46 years, with Ireland holding a special place in their hearts.

John was predeceased by his sister, Patricia (Donahue) Giannell. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his son Gary and his wife Lauren; his niece Andria and her husband Alan; his great-nieces Isabella and Olivia; his brother-in-law Jim Giannell.

John's legacy will live on through the countless memories he created, the exciting races he rode, and the stories that will continue to echo in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

In accordance with John's wishes, there will be no funeral service. The family will gather for a private scattering of his ashes in his favorite vacation spot, Key West, at a later date, to honor his memory.
