William Alphonses Smith

Aug 10, 1958 — Jun 8, 2026

William Alphonses Smith left us too soon, leaving behind a lifetime of stories, laughter, music, and projects that somehow always got finished - usually his way. He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Laurel Smith; his daughters, Stephanie Smith and Samantha Smith; his son-in-law, James; and his cherished grandchildren, Angelina, Nicolas, Tyler Rae, and Luca.

Bill was a musician from childhood, and music remained one of the great loves of his life. Whether he was playing, listening, recording, or sharing a favorite song, music was never far from reach. In true Bill fashion, even in his final days he was proudly handing out copies of his latest album, making sure everyone had a chance to hear what he had been working on.

If something was broken, Bill could probably fix it. Cars, engines, appliances, household projects - you name it. He had an incredible ability to understand how things worked and even more confidence that he could figure out anything he didn’t already know. He was the handyman everyone called, whether they wanted advice or not.

A New Yorker through and through, Bill carried the spirit of New York with him wherever he went. He spoke like a New Yorker, thought like a New Yorker, and definitely told stories like a New Yorker. If you asked Bill a simple question, there was a good chance you’d get a twenty-minute story, three side stories, and a life lesson before getting the answer. And somehow, everyone stayed to listen.

Bill was never shy about sharing his opinions. In fact, he considered it a public service. He said what was on his mind, stood up for what he believed, and always kept life interesting. His sharp wit, colorful commentary, and larger-than-life personality made him impossible to forget.

Above all else, Bill was a devoted husband, a proud father, and an adoring grandfather. He loved his family deeply and took great pride in watching it grow across generations.

Bill often said he wanted to be remembered with three simple words: “What a ride.” For those who knew and loved him, no phrase could be more fitting.

Though he will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in imagining him exactly as he would want to be: guitar nearby, toolbox within reach, surrounded by loved ones, playing a favorite song, and in the middle of telling one more story.

What a ride, indeed.

Forever loved. Forever remembered.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Sweet Relief in honor of William Alphonses Smith.
